Bread Bins for Your Kitchen
67I love talking about the bread bin. A bread bin can be found in the kitchen normally with a lid that is attached that opens but it can be used to store other items such as jars of jelly or marmalade. They can usually be found on top of a counter in the kitchen or on top of the refrigerator and maybe hanging from the underside of a cabinet. But whatever the choices bread bins are a great way to store bread.
Today the bread bin is not nearly as popular as it was 100 years ago. Back then it was almost a necessity to have a bread bin because preservatives were not created at that point in time. And as such because there were no preservatives bread did not last as it traditionally does these days.
Back then when you bought a loaf of bread typically you have a couple of days to eat before you having to throw away any leftovers. But if you had a bread bin you could store your bread a bit longer than the normal two or three days. If you didn't have one you would be forced to throw away any leftovers because the bread would either get hard or it would turn moldy very quickly.
Nowadays because of modern advances a bread bin has almost become extinct. Preservatives have increased the shelf life of bread almost 3 times as long as you can normally store bread that doesn't have preservatives. If you buy bread from a bakery it's usually fresh and without preservatives so you can see there still is a need for a bread bin these days.
There are many different styles of bread bins the most popular being made of steel or wood, but there are others that are made of earthenware, ceramic, or tin.
There are also some interesting styles such as the rolltop bread bin, the fall front bread bin, there's even a fingerprint proof bread bin! There are some bins that have a matte finish, some with a chrome finish too. There are also some made of wood but all bread bins have the same characteristic: they are airtight and help prolong the shelf life of bread.
Prices for bread bins wildly vary. A quick check on Amazon shows that you can find a stainless steel bread bin for under $20. There is also a hand-painted bread bin made of earthenware with a hunting dog design that sells for $240. As you can see prices vary wildly.
One of my favorite manufacturers of the bread bin is Brabantia. They have a huge selection of affordably priced bread bins that will fit any kitchen decor. Look for the black rolltop bread bin and window canister set from Brabantia. For $50 you get a large sized black bread bin with 3 47 ounce canisters that have a window good for storing grains, coffee beans, you name it. Highly recommend this bread bin for your kitchen.
